Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
