British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
